Branch Tanner

Of Amelia Co. VA.

Branch Tanner was born in Amelia Co. VA. He was the son of Lodowick Tanner and wife Frances Branch. He married 2 January 1764 VA. to Mary Page Finney who died before 1784. She was the daughter of William and Mary Finney.

Branch and Mary had three known children. There were probably more children, but I do not know their names.

It appears that this family is connected to the John W. Tanner who lived in GA. and died in Jackson Co. Mississippi. There were several of Branch’s grand children who went to MS. and LA., with the Lanier and Pierce families.

Joseph Tanner born about 1765 in North Carolina, married Elizabeth Lanier. She was born 1770 GA., and died 1809 in Bulloch Co. GA. Elizabeth was the daughter of Lemuel and Nancy Lanier. After the death of Elizabeth, Joseph moved to LA. He was issued a passport to travel through the Creek Nation. Joseph married Betsy Pearce after he arrived in LA. And (3) Eliza Grimbell and (4) Joyce Thomas Williams.

Other Lanier connections to Jackson Co. MS. Benjamin Lanier died in that Co. and Frances Davis who married James Goff was the grand daughter of Lemuel Lanier Jr. All of these families were in Duplin Co. before removing to GA. and on to the Mississippi Territory.

Now to the family of Joseph and Elizabeth Lanier Tanner. They had Eight children.

1. Lemuel Tanner born 1786 Screven Co. GA. and died 25 April, 1843 in Rapides Parish, LA. He married Celeste Agnes Bellanger, 30 October, 1814 in LA. She was born June 1796 in West Baton Rouge Parish, LA., and died after 1856. The daughter of Nicolas and Marguerite Bellanger.

2. Nancy Tanner born 1790 GA. married Stephen Jackson.
3. Rhonda Tanner born about 1792 GA. married James Pearce, son of William and Sarah Bray Pierce.

4. Lodowick Tanner born 22 August 1795, died 5 October, 1849 LA. He married Martha Ann Eldred.

5. Sarah Tanner born 1802 GA., married Paul Jazeb Roberts, son of Capt. Peter Roberts and wife, Ann Grimball.

6. Branch Tanner born 16 September, 1804 GA. died 16 March 1847 LA. He married Desiree Wells.

7. Esther Tanner born 4 September, 1806 GA. married Joshua Pierce(Pearce) she died 2 February, 1858 LA. Joshua was born 5 June, 1795 GA. and died 30 December, 1879 in Rapides Parish, LA. Son of William and Sarah Bray Pearce.

8. Asa Tanner born 1808 GA. married Caroline Williams (2) Ellen Woodson. No children.
