Capt. James Allen was a captain of militia in 1756, participated in the battle of Point Pleasant, where his brother, Lt. Hugh Allen, was killed. He died in 1810, at the age of 94. He was the eldest son of William Allen, who came from Ireland and settled in Augusta Co., VA., probably as early as 1723, though the exact date is not known.

Because of her great beauty and personal attractiveness, the wife of Capt. William Allen was widely known as "Charming Sukey Bell."
They removed to Fayette Co., KY., about 1788. Capt. William Allen served in the Revolution. He was a son of Capt. James Allen and wife Margaret Anderson, a daughter of John Anderson, a native of Ireland, who at an early date settled in Augusta Co.
1. Mary ("Polly") Bell Allen, b. circa 1787; d. Aug. 1873, aged 86 years; unm. Lived for many years in the family of her brother, James Hart Allen, in Missouri.
2.William Henderson Allen, born about 1790; died in Texas after the Civil War. He married Martha Frazer, and lived for many years in Staunton, VA. There were two daughters and two sons born of this marriage. One of the daughters married Dr. Hamilton of Staunton, VA.
3. Elizabeth ("Betsy") Allen, born about 1792; died 20 August, 1840. Married 05 May, 1812 to Dr. Alexander John Mitchell of Frankfort, KY., who died 26 July, 1822 aged 41 years. Son of Joseph and Martha Mitchell of Ohio Co., VA. (now W. Va.)
